First Malaysian International Salon of Photography Organised by: Photographic Society of Malaysia “A Salon such as this is not only very useful in a way of assisting our nations’ young and promising photographers to understand Malaysia and her people better through photography but also to provide us with an opportunity to compare our standards with that of the other countries.
It is utmost importance that the peoples of diverse races of this young nation should mingle freely without racial restraint and promote understanding with one mind, one purpose and one language and the best way to encourage this is nonetheless by organising more and more of the like Salons in our future years. It is here that the life and spirit of the happy Malaysian peoples are represented.”

Second Malaysia International Salon of Photography organised by: Photographic Society of Malaysia “To produce a photograph worthy for exhibition requires a selective eye. A pictorial photographer must have the ability to choose the best camera angle; to utilize the type of lighting to the best advantage; to be aware of the beauty around us; to have ability to seize an opportunity to record on film a fleeting moment.”

3rd international salon
“I am very pleased indeed to have been invited to open the Third Malaysia International Salon of Photography 1965 as one of the Patrons of the Pertubohan Penggambaran Malaysia. I am happy to do so because I have always had the keenest interest in photography, especially in the work of our own camera enthusiasts. The very great international response to the invitation to the Salon is a tribute to both the keenness and competence of Malaysian photographers, and I am sure it will be a great success indeed.”

Pertandingan dan pamiran seni foto kebangsaan 1974Objective: To increase the level of appreciation and to encourage the documentation of the Malaysian culture and way of life.
“Looking back at the 1973 competition it is obvious that a lot of photographers are still concentrating their works on the all too familiar shots of tin mines, fishing boats, padi fields and Thaipusam. There seem to be a kind of romantic attachment not only to the subject itself but also to the manner in which they have been expressed. Few however have gone beyond this, to work with subjects which are different and perhaps not so ‘glamorous’. But what is more important is that they have also managed to successfully express what they saw in the subject with feeling. It is perhaps to these few and to the schools of Photography at Institut Teknoloji MARA and Universiti Sains Malaysia that we must look to for development in photography in Malaysia.” – Panel Judges |
